Triton is a smartphone material study done in reaction my experience working on HTC's mobile design team. As mobile phone manufactures rely on the same components, manufacturers, and technology, products become inherently similar. During my time at HTC I learned to explore how mobile hardware can differentiate itself through CMF and user experience.

The State Of The Union —

When every phone uses the same Samsung display, Qualcomm processor, and LTE antenna, the design constraints become increasingly similar. These design constraints have driven manufactures towards similar materials and design execution.

Gorilla Glass Reigns Supreme —

As the relationship between conductive materials, wireless charging components, and antenna interference becomes increasingly complicated, mobile computing has arrived in the glass age. Look at any flagship phone in 2018, and you’ll find a metal sidewall sandwiched between layers of glass.

 
 
 

In an age where glass has become synonymous with “high-end”, how can we redefine what it means to be a premium material for mobile hardware?

 
 

Mohair Velvet —

As one of the oldest textiles still in use, Mohair Velvet is shorn from the Angola Goat. While products from Microsoft, and Google and paved the way in integrating textiles and consumer electronics, fabric use has remained exclusive to accessories for mobile products. Mohairs organic luster and durability allow us  to re-imagining a historically luxurious fabric integrated in an entirely different product category.

 

Machined Tension —

Inspired by water in surface tension, Triton takes the conventional layout of a mobile phone and pushes it outwards. Fluid surfaces intersect one another to emphasize each contrasting side. Visual weight is shifted forward envisioning a product entirely encased in screen. Details are precisely machined to accent action points.

Direction One —

Form exploration and detail studies were done in Illustrator.  A unidirectional 3D cover glass houses the stereo front facing speakers and full screen display. The flat back contrasts the curved front of the phone with plastic, micro suede, or ceramic back cover. Senton sensors replace traditional volume controls along the painted aluminum sidewall.

Direction Two —

Direction two features a slumped cover glass that drops past the center line creating a device that feels encased in screen. Shifting the internal components up behind the OLED helps mimic the feeling of a drop of water sitting in surface tension. Hardware controls on the side are highlighted in an accent color. Continued improvements in wireless charging allow for the removal of the USB-C.

Looking Up —

Triton's form was inspired by an observation of how our devices live in the environment around us. While not in our hands, phones increasingly live on the surfaces around us. Whether on a table during a meeting, or at a desk, our interaction with mobile devices is shifting out of our hands and integrating with our surroundings. The curved cover glass lifts the display out of the body, while the traditional soft form of mobile hardware molds to lay flat in its habitat. 

 

Machined Precision —

Power and volume accent themselves in red to draw attention to the action points. A combination of dual anodization and CNC machining reveal the red beneath the surface. A single camera module encases both rear cameras and flash to minimize trim pieces on the back velvet panel. 

 

Charging Pad —

Interacting with mobile devices as they "look up" from the surfaces around you increased as wireless charging becomes more efficient. The charging pad mirrors the phone's CMF and provides a home base for Triton to live within your space.
